SI-Monoflash: New High-Intensity Flash from Specialised Imaging

Specialised Imaging has announced the launch of the SI-Monoflash, a new high-intensity, short-duration flash system designed to “freeze” motion in demanding aeroballistic applications.

Evaluating the aerodynamic profile of a hypersonic projectile requires multiple ultra-high-speed camera stations positioned along the flight path. Capturing clear data is only possible with exposure times in the range of a few hundred nanoseconds. The SI-Monoflash delivers precisely this capability, producing a single, high-energy light pulse with a typical duration of 300 ns.

Freezing Hypersonic Motion

By integrating a short-duration, high-intensity illumination source into the testing setup, engineers can use standard, off-the-shelf single-shot cameras rather than relying solely on more complex custom systems. The SI-Monoflash spark source emits a powerful light burst that effectively freezes the motion of fast-moving objects, enabling sharper, more reliable image capture.

Designed for use in shadowgraph systems, the SI-Monoflash directs light onto a retroreflective screen. The resulting images reveal fine detail such as air turbulence, projectile surface effects, and the Mach cone, supporting accurate measurement of instantaneous velocities.

The unit is triggered via a TTL signal and can be daisy-chained for coordinated power control and system monitoring, offering flexibility for a variety of test configurations.

Seamless Integration with Specialised Imaging Cameras

The SI-Monoflash has been engineered for full compatibility with Specialised Imaging’s product range, including the SIM series ultra-fast framing cameras, the Kirana high-speed video camera, and the TCAM shadowgraph camera. This makes it a natural addition to existing setups for research, defence, and aerospace testing.
