Last year, MVPro explored how the machine vision industry was emerging from one of the most challenging periods in its history. That feature examined the road to recovery after global supply chain disruption, component shortages and unprecedented uncertainty. Twelve months later, we revisit the story to ask a different question. Recovery has happened but what comes next?

A year ago, on MVPro’s feature on the industry’s recovery, we looked at a sector finding its feet again. After years of semiconductor shortages, delayed deliveries and difficult conversations with customers, machine vision was finally beginning to breathe. Manufacturers were rebuilding confidence, system integrators were planning ahead once more and, for the first time in several years, innovation rather than availability was beginning to dominate the conversation.

At the time, there was a genuine sense of optimism. Not because every problem had been solved, but because the industry had demonstrated remarkable resilience. Companies had redesigned products around available components, strengthened relationships with suppliers and found new ways to keep customers moving despite extraordinary challenges.

When Mark Williamson, concluded our previous feature, the signs of recovery were becoming impossible to ignore. Investment was returning, confidence was steadily rebuilding and manufacturers were once again looking beyond survival towards innovation.

Twelve months later, those predictions have largely proved correct. But they have also given rise to an entirely different set of questions.

The shortages that defined the early years of this decade have, thankfully, eased. Yet conversations across the industry are once again touching on familiar themes. Procurement teams are monitoring lead times more carefully, manufacturers are considering future capacity and system designers are thinking more strategically about long-term component availability.

This is not a return to crisis. It is the consequence of an industry that has regained its momentum. Recovery, it turns out, was never the destination.

It was simply the beginning.

Why Sony Is Once Again at the Centre of the Conversation

Few companies provide a clearer snapshot of the current machine vision market than Sony.

Its Pregius and Pregius S CMOS image sensors have become the benchmark for industrial imaging, forming the heart of cameras produced by many of the industry’s leading manufacturers. Whether the badge on the front says Basler, Teledyne FLIR, Allied Vision, IDS or another established name, there is a good chance the imaging performance begins with a Sony sensor.

That success inevitably brings attention.

Over recent months there has been increasing discussion throughout the industry regarding the availability of certain high-demand sensor variants. Some distributors have reported extended lead times on selected devices, while camera manufacturers continue balancing customer demand with component supply. As always, speculation has followed.

However, the situation is very different from the one we were writing about only a year ago.

There is little evidence that Sony is experiencing a production crisis, nor are we seeing a repeat of the widespread semiconductor shortages that disrupted global manufacturing. Instead, what appears to be happening is something altogether different. Demand for advanced image sensors is continuing to grow across multiple industries, while manufacturing capacity remains a finite resource.

In many respects, this is simply the result of machine vision becoming more important than ever before.

Industrial automation is expanding rapidly. Battery manufacturing continues to grow. Semiconductor production requires increasingly sophisticated inspection systems. Robotics is entering new markets almost monthly, while artificial intelligence has transformed expectations of what machine vision systems can achieve.

Sony has become the focal point of these conversations not because it represents a problem, but because it reflects the success of the wider industry.

AI Has Changed Everything

One of the themes explored in our previous MVPro feature was that, once supply chains stabilised, manufacturers would finally be able to redirect their attention from sourcing components back to innovation. Looking at the market today, that prediction has become reality.

Artificial intelligence has accelerated the evolution of machine vision at an extraordinary pace.

Today’s cameras are no longer installed simply to inspect products or capture images. Increasingly, they provide the information that intelligent manufacturing systems depend upon. Every frame captured has the potential to become training data for machine learning models, guidance information for collaborative robots or the basis for automated decision-making on the factory floor.

That subtle change has profound implications.

Five years ago, many inspection systems were designed around deterministic rules. Engineers taught machines exactly what to look for and how to respond. Today’s AI-driven systems are expected to classify defects, recognise patterns and improve continuously through exposure to ever larger volumes of image data. The image itself is no longer the destination. It is the beginning of an AI workflow.

That explains why demand for higher-resolution sensors, faster frame rates and improved image quality continues to increase. Better images produce better data, and better data ultimately leads to more capable artificial intelligence.

Lessons Learned

When Mark wrote about the industry’s recovery last year, one of the strongest messages to emerge from our conversations with manufacturers was their remarkable adaptability. Faced with unprecedented shortages, engineering teams redesigned products around available components, qualified alternative suppliers in record time and found innovative ways to keep production moving.

Those lessons have not been forgotten. If anything, they have become embedded throughout the industry.

Manufacturers increasingly validate multiple component options during product development rather than relying on a single supplier. System integrators now consider alternative camera platforms far earlier in the design process, while purchasing teams maintain much closer relationships with distributors and supply partners than ever before.

Inventory strategies have also evolved. The just-in-time philosophy that dominated manufacturing for decades has given way to a more balanced approach. Companies remain reluctant to tie up unnecessary capital in stock, but equally few wish to repeat the vulnerabilities exposed during recent supply chain disruption.

Perhaps the greatest legacy of that difficult period is not technological at all. It is organisational resilience. The industry is undoubtedly stronger because of the challenges it was forced to overcome.

The Next Chapter

Our previous article concluded that recovery would allow the industry to innovate again rather than simply react to circumstances. Looking at the market today, that appears to have been exactly what has happened. Artificial intelligence, robotics, advanced automation and digital manufacturing have quickly become the dominant themes, while conversations about supply have shifted from crisis management towards sensible long-term planning.

That represents real progress.

Machine vision has always evolved by solving difficult engineering problems. From analogue cameras to digital imaging, from frame grabbers to intelligent edge devices and now to AI-powered inspection systems, the industry has repeatedly adapted to changing technology and changing customer expectations.

Today’s challenge is different once again.

It is no longer simply about building faster cameras or developing higher-resolution sensors. It is about ensuring that an increasingly interconnected global supply chain can support the remarkable pace of innovation taking place across manufacturing, logistics, life sciences, robotics and industrial automation. There will undoubtedly be periods when demand temporarily outpaces supply for particular technologies. Certain sensors will remain more sought after than others, while new applications will continue to emerge faster than manufacturers can sometimes respond.

But unlike the situation we described a year ago, the industry is better prepared.

Manufacturers have learned valuable lessons. Supply chains are more resilient. Customers are planning further ahead, while engineering teams have become more adaptable than ever before.

Twelve months ago, we asked whether machine vision had finally turned the corner. Looking back, the answer appears to be yes. The industry has recovered, but in doing so it has created an entirely new set of opportunities and new challenges to match.

If our previous feature was about recovery, this one is about resilience. Because recovery, as it turns out, was just the beginning.
