Welcome

Hello, and welcome to the next issue of 2025.  Intelligence.

AI is fast becoming a the key technology in ever industry and ours is no exception.  In this months issue both Mark and Rachel write specifically on this and I also add a small piece about the wider world with our industry and AI.

Mark’s article looks at how our industry has transformed over the past 35 years.  Going from high-value applications like nuclear industries to now include cheaper and faster cameras, better processing power, and standardised interfaces like Camera Link and USB, making machine vision more accessible.  He also looks at how new technologies like virtual inspection planning, digital twins, and generative AI are expected to further reduce costs by improving design and efficiency, allowing machine vision to be adopted in even more applications.

Rachel looks at how AI is increasingly being integrated into machine vision systems to enhance their capabilities, particularly for complex image analysis tasks. AI has proven beneficial in real-world applications such as Teledyne’s intelligent traffic system, Tesla’s self-driving car technology, and Pleora Technologies’ quality control solutions, where it improves object recognition and reduces human error. She then looks how the demand for advanced AI-driven machine vision solutions grows, integrating AI requires high processing power, secure networking, and compliance with industry standards, ensuring scalability and durability for future applications.

I think these are both worth your time.

We also have another excellent piece from Ron Mueller, Vision Markets.  Here he looks at the automation industry and how it widely withstands recession in manufacturing.

He looks at that despite lingering challenges like trade tariffs and geopolitical uncertainties—particularly the renewed US-China trade tensions, analysts predict moderate recovery, with growth rates expected between 5-7%, although regional and industry-specific performance will continue to vary.

For those looking to navigate this evolving landscape, Vision Markets offers expert insights to help craft informed strategies in the industrial automation and machine vision sectors.

Finally we still have the usual excellent news and stories from around the industry.  I hope you enjoy this issue and as previously mentioned I would love to start including more work from colleagues across the industry especially students so please do drop me an email with any comments or questions.

Best Wishes
Tom
