The proposed acquisition will bring Hailo’s edge AI processors and vision SoCs into Microchip’s embedded systems portfolio, reinforcing the growing importance of AI acceleration in machine vision and intelligent edge applications.

Microchip Technology has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Hailo, the Israeli developer of edge AI processors and vision system-on-chip (SoC) solutions. While financial terms have not been disclosed, the transaction is expected to close before the end of Microchip’s September quarter, subject to customary regulatory approvals.

The acquisition represents a strategic expansion of Microchip’s capabilities in intelligent edge computing, adding Hailo’s portfolio of AI accelerators, vision processors and software tools to its existing embedded processing, FPGA, connectivity and security technologies. Together, the combined offering is expected to address applications including robotics, industrial automation, smart cameras, drones and embedded AI systems.

Hailo has established itself as one of the leading providers of power-efficient edge AI processors for machine vision. Its product family includes the Hailo-8, Hailo-10 and Hailo-15 devices, supporting computer vision, image signal processing (ISP), digital signal processing (DSP), AI video stream processing and video encoding within compact edge platforms. According to Microchip, the acquisition also brings more than 100 customers and a developer community of over 10,000 users.

“The acquisition of Hailo accelerates Microchip’s expansion into high-performance edge AI processing,” said Mark Reiten, Senior Corporate Vice President at Microchip. He added that Hailo’s AI acceleration, advanced vision processing and software ecosystem complements Microchip’s existing embedded technologies, enabling customers to develop more capable intelligent edge systems while balancing performance, power efficiency and system cost.

For the machine vision industry, the deal reflects a broader trend towards integrating AI acceleration directly into embedded hardware. Rather than relying solely on external GPUs or cloud processing, camera manufacturers and automation developers are increasingly seeking low-power, on-device AI capable of supporting advanced vision workloads closer to the sensor.
