How Smart Vision Lights is redefining machine vision illumination with Hidden Strobe technology and dynamic projection

It’s a simple statement, but it may be the single most important lesson for anyone designing a machine vision system. While cameras continue to become faster, sensors more sensitive and AI more capable, none of them can analyse information that never reaches the sensor in the first place. That’s the philosophy driving Smart Vision Lights, the Michigan-based specialist manufacturer whose entire focus is dedicated to one thing, industrial LED lighting for machine vision.
Speaking with MV Pro Media, Steve Kinney, Director of Training, Compliance and Technical Solutions, at Smart Vision Lights, explained why lighting deserves to be considered every bit as important as the camera itself.
More Than Just Bright Lights
Founded in Michigan and proudly manufacturing in the USA, Smart Vision Lights has spent nearly two decades developing purpose-built LED illumination for industrial imaging.
Its products support applications across automotive manufacturing, logistics, robotics, packaging and factory automation.
Unlike conventional industrial lighting, every product is designed around one objective, giving cameras the best possible image.
That might sound straightforward, but in practice it requires balancing brightness, heat, exposure time and synchronisation. It’s an engineering challenge that becomes increasingly important as manufacturers demand higher throughput and greater inspection accuracy.

Three Lights. One Housing. Three Completely Different Performance Levels.

One demonstration on the stand perfectly illustrated how much innovation can exist inside what appears to be identical hardware.
Three linear bar lights shared the same mechanical footprint.
To most visitors they looked almost identical.
In reality, each represented a different stage in lighting evolution.
The first was a conventional continuous LED bar light.
Bright, reliable and ideal for many inspection tasks. Its limitation, however, is heat. Continuous operation means the LEDs are permanently energised, limiting how much current, and therefore brightness, can safely be delivered.
The second model approaches the problem differently. Instead of remaining permanently illuminated, it operates in overdrive strobe mode. By pulsing the LEDs for extremely short durations, they can safely run at approximately five times their normal operating current.
The result is around three-and-a-half times more usable light while remaining within thermal limits. That increase dramatically reduces camera exposure time. During the demonstration, exposure dropped from approximately 450 microseconds to just 40 microseconds.
For high-speed inspection systems, that’s a significant advantage. The trade-off? Visible strobing. While cameras synchronise perfectly with the flashes, operators may find the flickering distracting.
Hidden Strobe Changes Everything

Smart Vision Lights believes it has solved that problem. Its latest development introduces Hidden Strobe technology.
To the human eye, the light appears completely continuous. Behind the scenes, however, it is still operating as an ultra-fast strobe.
When there is no camera trigger, the light self-pulses at approximately 1,300Hz, fast enough that the human eye perceives it as constant illumination. When the camera requires an image, it instantly switches into high-power strobe mode. The result is the best of both worlds.
Operators experience comfortable lighting while cameras benefit from exposure times as low as 20 microseconds.
That performance is particularly attractive for logistics, warehouse automation and high-speed conveyor applications where labels and barcodes must be captured perfectly at ever-increasing speeds.

Designed for Easy Upgrades
One of Smart Vision Lights’ long-standing design philosophies is simplicity. Every light contains its own integrated controller.
That eliminates the need for external drivers while ensuring LEDs are supplied with precisely controlled current rather than relying purely on voltage.
For system integrators, there’s another major benefit. Every product shares the same connector and interface. Replacing a standard light with a higher-performance version can often be achieved by simply unplugging one unit and connecting another.
No redesign. No additional controller. No rewiring.
For manufacturers looking to increase throughput without replacing entire inspection systems, that’s a significant advantage.
Beyond Illumination
Perhaps the biggest surprise on the stand wasn’t actually a commercial product. Instead, Smart Vision Lights showcased a technology demonstration developed alongside Osram. Originally designed for adaptive automotive headlights capable of masking sections of the beam to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers, the technology is now being explored for industrial automation.
Rather than producing static illumination, hundreds of individually addressable LEDs create dynamic projected patterns.
Potential applications include:
- Interactive operator guidance
- Dynamic assembly instructions
- Projected pass/fail indicators
- Adaptive factory floor safety zones
- Structured-light projection for enhanced 3D vision
Although still at the demonstration stage, it offers a glimpse into how machine vision lighting could evolve beyond simple illumination into active communication between machines and operators.

Why Lighting Still Matters
The rapid growth of AI has tempted many manufacturers to believe software can compensate for poor images.
Steve disagrees.
Different lighting geometries reveal different information. Dark field lighting highlights edges. Bright field lighting exposes surface defects. Backlighting isolates silhouettes. The camera remains exactly the same.
Only the lighting changes. Yet the information available for analysis can be completely different. Whether inspection is performed by a traditional vision algorithm or the latest AI model, success still depends on presenting the correct visual information in the first place. As Steve reminds us, AI cannot recover details that were never captured.
