Kinetic Expands USB-C Overvoltage Protection IC Portfolio With KTS1890 Device

Kinetic Technologies has launched a USB VBUS Safety Management Current Limited Load Switch, supporting the latest 28V level of USB PD3.1 Extended Power Range (EPR) systems. The KTS1890 5V/3A Load Switch completes Kinetic’s safety management kit of products for 28V USB EPR.

Together with its KTS1898 6ARMS VBUS ISINK load switch and its KTU1128 USB Type-C data line (CC & SBU) protector, these three devices provide the most robust and complete set of protection features on the market today.

Key applications for the KTS1890 include gaming and workstation notebooks, desktop PCs, docking stations, monitors, conferencing systems, gaming consoles, and any USB Type-C Dual Role Port design with PD 3.1 EPR 28V input.

The KTS1890 is a USB VBUS safety management load switch for 15W current-source output in systems with 28V EPR current sink input. The input operating range is 2.5V to 5.5V, but the output withstands up to 35VDC at the USB port. Current limit protection (CLP) is adjustable from 400mA to 4.0A. Low on-resistance minimizes heat and voltage droop. Soft-start (SS) limits inrush current. Reverse-current protection (RCP) acts as a 20mV “ideal diode” with fast recovery.

Karl Volk, System Applications Director at Kinetic Technologies, says, “The combination of our new KTS1890, together with our KTS1898 and KTU1128 parts, provides a chipset trio setting a new benchmark for protection at every 28V USB EPR port, ensuring the quality and operational integrity of your products.”

Additional integrated safety management for the KTS1890 device includes ultra-fast over-current protection (OCP), short-circuit protection (SCP) during and after soft-start, over-temperature protection (OTP), and integrated transient voltage suppression (TVS) for IEC industry standard ±30kV ESD and ±130V surge protection.
