What will be the biggest trend in machine vision in 2020?
We’re expecting 2020 to experience continued growth in many key areas of 3D inline inspection driven by changes in manufacturing processes where 2D can’t do the job. Technologies to pay close attention to include deep learning using 3D point clouds with edge processing, and further widespread adoption of industrial robots as these solutions become easier to integrate and calibrate.
What do you predict will be the biggest challenge in 2020?
One challenge this year will be the potential limitations on capital investment due to macroeconomic uncertainties (e.g., trade dynamics among various countries, US presidency). A second challenge is anticipating the rate of adoption of EV and hybrid vs traditional vehicles which will determine our growth in the battery market.
What are the company’s ambitions and plans for 2020?
Our goal is to continue to be a world leader in innovative, in-line 3D metrology solutions supported by a world-class machine vision software platform. Combining our existing product portfolio of 3D line profilers and snapshot sensors with our newly acquired line confocal solutions, LMI now offers solutions for most inline 3D inspection needs.
What industry event are you looking forward to attending in 2020 and why?

Looking back over the past year, what have been the business’s highlights?
The acquisition of FocalSpec and the addition of its patented line confocal technology comes in at the top of the list. We also introduced new 3D and 2D OCR (based on deep learning methods), barcode reading, advanced filtering, and surface masking tools to the Gocator platform. Now our focus is on developing integrated solutions with 3D hardware, software, applications, and robots.
